Challenging times require leaders to know how their people are feeling, how they are doing and what the real challenges are.

Back in Florida, our Scout troop camped often. One weekend, a Scout called out, “Miss Diane! My head hurts.” On such a hot & humid day, I was sure I knew what her problem was. “You’re dehydrated. You need to drink more water,” I confidently instructed, “Your headache will go away if you drink plenty of water.”

“That could be it,” she replied cautiously, “Or it could be that pole that I just walked into.”

I was so quick to show off my knowledge that I forgot to be curious and listen.

Are you taking the time to listen? Or are you fixing problems that aren’t even there?
